Monthly child tax credit checks started in July and are steadily rolling in for many eligible families through December. But between federal tax refund delays, stimulus checks and unemployment benefits ending, the tax agency’s hands are full. On top of everything, child tax credit payments were delayed for 4 million families due to an IRS glitch that resulted in paper checks being sent instead of a direct deposit. Meanwhile, other parents are still waiting for child tax credit payments because of incorrect banking information or the wrong mailing address. And some are receiving different amounts than expected — which could affect your taxes next year.
There are a number of reasons why your check could be missing, but there’s a way to find out where your money is. Fortunately, if you’re still waiting for your payment, one IRS online tool can give you a clue about where your money is or why your check is delayed. And if you didn’t receive August’s check, you may still get the rest of what you are due this year in the remaining four payments in 2021.
